Navigating the beautiful, challenging journey of breastfeeding.

Real Talk: Breastfeeding

If you find the early days of breastfeeding difficult, you're definitely not alone. In fact, up to 80% of new mothers will experience challenges feeding in the first days and weeks with their new bubba.

It may be the most natural thing in the world, but that doesn't mean it comes naturally; to mama, or baby.

Whether it's latch issues, tongue-tie, a sleepy baby, slow supply or cracked nipples and a painful let down; the experience of breastfeeding your new baby can be one of the most surprisingly difficult parts of your entry into motherhood.

*Most* women will have a rocky road into breastfeeding. You and baby are both learning and it's totally normal to find it hard at first!

THE REALITIES OF BREASTFEEDING

One of the most common challenges new mothers face is nipple pain. The first week can be especially tough, as your nipples may become cracked and even bleed. This pain can make every latch a struggle, as one mother shares:

"One thing I wasn’t quite prepared for in the first week was the breastfeeding nipple pain. I didn’t quite realise that my nipples would actually be cracked and bleeding. It was SO SORE, like every time my baby would latch I would have to gasp and push through the pain. It was really hard!"

It's also not uncommon when pumping, to see a slight discolouration of your breastmilk caused by this bleeding. This is completely normal, and you do not need to dump this hard earned batch of liquid gold (or orange).

To help soothe and heal, consider using Pure Mama Nipple Butter.  Expertly formulated with all-natural ingredients to provide relief and promote healing, making those early days a bit more bearable.

CLUSTER FEEDING AND SUPPLY ISSUES

Cluster feeding can be another daunting aspect of breastfeeding. It often feels like your baby is feeding constantly attached, leading to worries about your milk supply. One mother describes her experience:

"I then got a huge complex about my supply as my baby was just cluster feeding for weeks. I felt like there was no respite."

It's important to remember that cluster feeding is normal and usually a sign that your baby is growing and stimulating your milk supply. If you're concerned, seek advice from a lactation consultant.

THE PUMPING MARATHON

Pumping is often seen as a solution to various breastfeeding challenges, but it can also be exhausting. It's a job in itself, as one mother recounts:

"I ended up introducing formula quite early on (week 4) and worked really hard at pumping as well, although that is not for the fainthearted. Pumping is a job."

Finding the right balance between breastfeeding, pumping, and formula feeding is key. Remember, there's no one right way to feed your baby.

THE IMPORTANCE OF SUPPORT

Having the right support can make a significant difference. Whether it’s from a midwife, a lactation consultant, or a supportive partner, their knowledge and encouragement can be invaluable. One mother reflects on her positive experience:

"I feel very fortunate to have had such a great experience thanks to the knowledge and support I had from my incredible midwife and lactation consultant."

THE MENTAL HEALTH ASPECT

Breastfeeding can take a toll on your mental health, especially if you're struggling. It's crucial to prioritise your well-being, as a happy mom means a happy baby. Another mother shares her journey with mental health and breastfeeding:

"With my first I was desperate to breastfeed as this was the only way in my mind. I put a lot of pressure on myself... The anxiety around making sure I had pumped enough milk and that she was putting on weight was next level... 2nd child, I stopped at 2 months, as I knew better than to put my mental health at risk. Happy mum, happy baby. No regrets."

Breastfeeding is a unique journey for every mother and baby. It comes with its challenges, but with the right support and resources, you can navigate through it. Remember, whether you breastfeed, pump, use formula, or a combination of all three, the most important thing is the health and happiness of both you and your baby.
