Why we don't use Lanolin in our Nipple Butter.

WHY WE CHOOSE NOT TO USE LANOLIN IN OUR NIPPLE BUTTER?

Breastfeeding can be one of the most rewarding parts of motherhood, and as you and your baby learn, grow and find your rhythm together, breastfeeding can place new demands on your skin. Dryness, tenderness and cracked nipples are all common in those early weeks, making gentle, nourishing nipple care an important part of your daily feeding ritual.

When we set out to create our Nipple Butter, we looked beyond the traditional approach. Rather than relying on lanolin as our hero ingredient, we developed a lanolin-free nourishing formula designed to support the skin barrier and included healing ingredients that your skin actually needs.

So why did we choose not to formulate with lanolin?

Firstly, we need to discuss what lanolin actually is:

Lanolin is a naturally occurring wax extracted from sheep's wool. For decades it has been a common ingredient in nipple care because it forms a protective barrier over the skin, helping reduce moisture loss.

It remains a popular ingredient and is considered suitable for many breastfeeding mothers. However, when developing our Nipple Butter formula, we wanted to create more than a barrier, because while creating a protective layer can be beneficial, we believed breastfeeding skin deserved more than that.

A different approach to nipple care: What we chose instead…

Our Nipple Butter is clinically shown to improve skin barrier function and reduce trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL), a key measure of how effectively the skin retains moisture. By strengthening the skin barrier and reducing moisture loss, the skin is better able to stay hydrated, resilient and comfortable when you need it most.

Our hero ingredients include:

Calendula helps condition and comfort dry, delicate skin.

New Zealand Kawakawa is a treasured native botanical valued for helping care for stressed skin.

Marshmallow Root helps leave skin feeling soft, conditioned and comfortable.

Shea Butter is naturally rich in fatty acids that replenish moisture and support the skin barrier.

Together, these restorative ingredients work to do more than simply protect the skin. They help replenish moisture, restore comfort and leave delicate skin feeling soft, nourished and cared for throughout your breastfeeding journey.

TOP TIP:  We actually recommend starting to use Nipple Butter prior to your babies arrival.

Starting as early as around 34 weeks of pregnancy to help nourish the skin and support the skin barrier as you prepare for breastfeeding. Making it part of your daily routine before birth can help keep your nipples feeling soft, hydrated and comfortable, so you're one step ahead when those first feeds begin.

At PURE MAMA, we chose to formulate beyond the obvious. We created a nourishing botanical butter designed to support your skin throughout pregnancy, breastfeeding and beyond, because we believe mothers deserve thoughtfully formulated skincare that works as hard as they do.

Whether you're preparing to breastfeed or already in the thick of those newborn feeds, our Nipple Butter is designed to become a comforting part of your daily ritual.
